PORTRAIT SESSION GUIDE

Portrait Session Guide

Portrait sessions take place at a location of your choice: outdoor, indoor, or in the comfort of your home. I will meet you at the prearranged location and time. Usually, I arrive early to scout out the best spots for photos. Although I prefer using natural available light, I can set up a portable backdrop and/or lighting if needed.

Before we begin the session, we will spend a few minutes to get to know each other. This is a good time to let me know if there are particular poses or subjects that you’d like for me to focus on. Once we start, try to relax, smile, be yourselves, and have some fun!

What to wear?

I do not have rules on what you should wear. The more comfortable you feel, the better you’ll look in photos. A few tips: avoid wearing all white, too much pattern, and many large, shiny accessories. Solid colored tops are always flattering. When choosing a color scheme, consider the location for the shoot, you don’t want your outfit(s) to blend in or clash with the background. When in doubt, bring extra options—most sessions allow time for at least one wardrobe change. Consider bringing accessories and layering pieces to easily change up an outfit and create different looks. Also, for those doing an outdoor session, don’t forget your jackets. You can use them in between shots to stay warm in case it’s windy, foggy, or possibly, rainy.

Hair and make-up

If you are doing an engagement session, this is a great time to do a trial run with your hair and make-up artist. You can also do your own hair and makeup, but it’s not required for photos. Again, the more comfortable you feel, the better you will come out in photos.

Props

I do not provide any props, but you can include objects of your own—I find using personal belongings as props makes the portraits more intimate and memorable. For outdoor locations, I recommend bringing a blanket to sit on.

What happens if it rains on the day of our session?

Please be prepared for bad weather and choose an indoor, rain-friendly location as backup if you are planning an outdoor session during rainy season, We can touch base a few hours before the shoot to determine a better location if rain is forecasted.

Please note: cancelling a shoot means the retainer fee (specified in the contract) will not be refunded. If my schedule permits, we can reschedule your session and apply the retainer towards the new date.

Family sessions - embrace the chaos!

Parents, as long as you keep smiling and looking at the camera, I will find a shot. Don’t worry if your kids are not behaving, the house is a mess, or your little one had a meltdown and needs a break. I encourage you to embrace your family life and let your kids be kids. Let go of the notion of the 'perfect' family photo, and allow me to find the magic.

After your Portrait Session

Around 2-3 weeks after your session, you will receive your final edited images via online gallery for choosing prints and making additional orders. Please allow time for shipping. If you are ordering an album, expect an additional 2-3 weeks for printing.

All portrait session packages include digital images (high-res + web-sized) on a USB drive, a complimentary print, and print credit.

All images are color corrected with minor retouching. If you have any special concerns, i.e. an unwanted scar, acne, red eyes, and would like to request extra retouching, please let me know before the day of the session. Some adjustments can be made during the event to hide problem areas, and I am happy to retouch your images and pay special attention to the areas of concern during my post production process, at no additional cost. However, there will be an additional fee if you make a request for extra retouching after the final delivery of your images.
